All are rear dive, but only the saloon looks any good. It also come with four body variations (5-door, 3-door, Coupe and Convertible), the widest range of engines in the segment, uncompromising premium quality and even more innovations.
The 1 Series coupe (E82) and convertible (E88) went on sale in the United States in model year 2008 as the 128i and the 135i. Other countries received the 120i and 125i in both platforms. The convertible, unlike the 3 Series convertible, uses a soft-top instead of a folding hardtop. This is lighter, cheaper to manufacture and preserves more trunk space than the folding hardtop would allow.
For 2009MY BMW offers two new 4-cylinder diesel engines for BMW 1 Series Convertible. Power ranging from 122 hp in the BMW 116i with 306 hp of the BMW 135i.
The 2.0 liter, 1143 horsepower 4-cylinder diesel engine with the model that has been voted "World Green Car of the Year" in 2008, is now available for the BMW 1 Series Convertible. The new BMW 118d Convertible accelerates in 9.5 seconds from zero to 100 km / h and sets new standards for open-top four-seater vehicles with an average fuel consumption of 4.9 liters per 100 kilometer in the EU test cycle and a CO2 emissions of 129 grams per kilometer.
The most state-of-the-art chassis in the segment and rear-wheel drive – still unique in the compact class – form the basis of the outstanding agility of the 5-door, 3-door, Coupe and Convertible models of the BMW 1 Series. The spectrum of engines is also of unsurpassed breadth, ranging from 90 kW/122 bhp in the BMW 116i to 225 kW/306 bhp in the BMW 135i. The modern engines owe their high performance among other things to pioneering technologies such as VALVETRONIC, Twin Turbo and Variable Twin Turbo.
As an additional safety feature, the 3-door and 5-door models of the BMW 1 Series will be fitted as standard with crash-optimised seatbacks and headrests for the driver and front passenger seat as of autumn 2008, reducing the risk of injury to the cervical spine in the event of a rear-on collision. The list of new features for the BMW 1 Series is rounded off with new options for visual individualisation of the vehicle. The range of exterior paint finishes has been extended with the addition of a particularly high-quality and modern colour: Space Grey metallic. To match this, decor strips are available for the interior in Satin Silver matt, providing a sporty, modern touch.
The current 1-Series has often been criticized for having a back seat no full-sized adult would be comfortable in. Not the most comfortable of cars because the ride can be jittery at times. Most versions are also stuck with doll's house rear seats and a Rubik's Cube-sized boot. Space in the front is fine though.
