3 series - part 3

info on 3 series .... 1977-1983

From the perspective of the 21st century, BMW 3 Series is so slam-dunk-a wonderful car as there are available. The 3 Series enjoys a reputation for packing the exceptional driving dynamics, high quality and excellent • denied the prestige gained in the handsome veneer. This is the standard against which all other small sport sedan, and must be measured. Already in the 20th century, when the 3 Series first appeared, is generally considered the cream of the crop of small sport sedan.

In the mid 1970s, BMW faces the task of replacing the outdated 2002 coupe. But the company also knew that in 2002, embodies the spirit of the company. As such, it replaced the 2002 should maintain this spirit was maintained, while modernizing in other respects.

BMW chose an opportune time to enter the history of the first generation 3 Series, internally designated E21. The world was emerging from the shock of the oil embargo as the first line of assembling laminated Milbertshofen May 2, 1975, and the people who would never have considered a smaller car now has found the idea of a fun and tardy machine irresistible. In 1974, BMW sold 184,330 vehicles, but reinforced by the European market for 3 series in 1975, worldwide sales reached 221,298. 3-series success in North America as a 1977 model, which drove the BMW production over 290,000 this year and then 320,000 in 1978.

The only model available Stateside E21, the 320i. It is slightly larger than the outgoing 2002 (to 100.9 inches, 3 wheelbase is 2.5 cm longer and the car length of 177.5 inches is 1.5 inches long) and that the mammoth depends peaceful nature, along with a more stable, but also. As a direct successor of 2002, the 320i is available as a two-door and conducted the majority of issues that the design of the car door, founded as propped up the grill, cut side windows and rear A low waist line .

Under the skin, the car was a step in the evolution from 2002. The basic elements like the MacPherson front and end of the arm rear suspension and front disc and rear drum power braking system is different in the details and specifics, but was similar in overall design. For power, the car has a 2.0 liter engine Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injected in-line 4 rated 110 horsepower, that meet the emission regulations without a catalyst. The standard transmission remained a Getrag four-speed manual, while three-speed ZF automatic is optional.

The evolution of the U.S. market-E21 320i is incremental. In 1980, the engine was reduced to 1.8 liters per day (although the name remained 320i) and BMW added a three-way catalyst for emission control system. When there is now 100 kW, 1.8 's lack of performance has improved to some extent by adopting a five-speed manual transmission. In each case, these changes blur the enthusiasm of the United States for cars, as sales continue to increase, driven by the growing reputation of BMW and a second oil embargo in 1979. As the E21s last few years have been aware of wards distributors in 1983, has firmly established its BMW 3, 5 and 7 Series sedan product mix and is ready to move all its luxury goods progressively in the rest of the decade .

The BMW 3 Series is a compact executive car manufactured by the German automaker BMW since May 1975. Successor to the BMW New Class, it has been produced in five different generations and in no less than five different body styles. It is BMW's best selling automobile, accounting for nearly 40% of the company's auto sales in 2005.

BMW released its E21 in the wake of the 1973 oil crisis, attracting customers seeking both prestige and economy, nearly doubling BMW's worldwide auto sales figures in three years, and winning numerous automotive world awards and honors. Three decades later, the 3 Series is still the best-selling of its class, as commonplace in Asia, America and Australia as in Europe, and it has even outsold some cheaper models, like Ford Mondeo in the UK. While some argue that the popularity of the car had reduced its prestigious image, the 3 Series still remains the benchmark and its competitors are often judged on how close they come to this car. The 3 series has also maintained BMW's racing heritage. The M version of the 3 series, M3, debuted in 1988. The 3 series cars usually sell well, but two-door versions usually do not sell as well as sedan versions.

the 1 series part 2

Part 2 will focus on additional info regarding the 1 series ....

As of autumn 2008 the BMW 1 Series provides the perfect conditions for enjoyment of state-of-the-art communication and entertainment technology in the vehicle. A new snap-in adapter in the accessory range and a matching USB circuit board as an optional extra makes it possible to fully integrate current smartphone models in the BMW 1 Series. With the option of extended connection of the music player in a mobile phone it is possible to use both the communication and the entertainment functions of the phone and control them using the iDrive operating system. Telephone numbers and music titles stored in the smartphone are then shown in the Control Display. The power supply to the smartphone and reception via car aerial are also taken care of. The new interface can be used for the integration of the mobile phones Apple iPhone, Sony Ericsson K850i and Nokia 6500c.

Other superlatives are provided by the second new version of the BMW 1 Series Convertible available in autumn 2008. In the BMW 123d Convertible, the world’s first all-aluminium diesel engine with a rated output of over 100 bhp per litre of capacity ensures enormous pulling power combined with impressive economic efficiency. Piezo injectors feed the fuel at a pressure of up to 2000 bar into the four combustion chambers. The Variable Twin Turbo Technology provides spontaneous and lasting thrust, with an output of 150 kW/204 bhp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. The BMW 123d Convertible accelerates in just 7.5 seconds from zero to 100 km/h. Its average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is 5.4 litres per 100 kilometres, and its CO2 level is 144 grams per kilometre.

Navigation System Professional in the BMW 1 Series: travel companion at luxury performance level with full screen display, preview maps, 3D symbols and guided tours.

Rear-drive makes the 1-Series one of the most satisfying small cars to thrash about in, but the lack of a limited-slip diff can be frustrating in the higher-powered cars if you really want to play. Great steering and a superbly controlled body are the key components.

The 1 series

All are rear dive, but only the saloon looks any good. It also come with four body variations (5-door, 3-door, Coupe and Convertible), the widest range of engines in the segment, uncompromising premium quality and even more innovations.

The 1 Series coupe (E82) and convertible (E88) went on sale in the United States in model year 2008 as the 128i and the 135i. Other countries received the 120i and 125i in both platforms. The convertible, unlike the 3 Series convertible, uses a soft-top instead of a folding hardtop. This is lighter, cheaper to manufacture and preserves more trunk space than the folding hardtop would allow.

For 2009MY BMW offers two new 4-cylinder diesel engines for BMW 1 Series Convertible. Power ranging from 122 hp in the BMW 116i with 306 hp of the BMW 135i.

The 2.0 liter, 1143 horsepower 4-cylinder diesel engine with the model that has been voted "World Green Car of the Year" in 2008, is now available for the BMW 1 Series Convertible. The new BMW 118d Convertible accelerates in 9.5 seconds from zero to 100 km / h and sets new standards for open-top four-seater vehicles with an average fuel consumption of 4.9 liters per 100 kilometer in the EU test cycle and a CO2 emissions of 129 grams per kilometer.

The most state-of-the-art chassis in the segment and rear-wheel drive – still unique in the compact class – form the basis of the outstanding agility of the 5-door, 3-door, Coupe and Convertible models of the BMW 1 Series. The spectrum of engines is also of unsurpassed breadth, ranging from 90 kW/122 bhp in the BMW 116i to 225 kW/306 bhp in the BMW 135i. The modern engines owe their high performance among other things to pioneering technologies such as VALVETRONIC, Twin Turbo and Variable Twin Turbo.

As an additional safety feature, the 3-door and 5-door models of the BMW 1 Series will be fitted as standard with crash-optimised seatbacks and headrests for the driver and front passenger seat as of autumn 2008, reducing the risk of injury to the cervical spine in the event of a rear-on collision. The list of new features for the BMW 1 Series is rounded off with new options for visual individualisation of the vehicle. The range of exterior paint finishes has been extended with the addition of a particularly high-quality and modern colour: Space Grey metallic. To match this, decor strips are available for the interior in Satin Silver matt, providing a sporty, modern touch.

The current 1-Series has often been criticized for having a back seat no full-sized adult would be comfortable in. Not the most comfortable of cars because the ride can be jittery at times. Most versions are also stuck with doll's house rear seats and a Rubik's Cube-sized boot. Space in the front is fine though.

The circular blue and white BMW logo or roundel is portrayed by BMW as the movement of an aircraft propeller, to signify the white blades cutting through the blue sky – an interpretation that BMW adopted for convenience in 1929, twelve years after the roundel was created. The emblem evolved from the circular Rapp Motorenwerke company logo, from which the BMW company grew, combined with the white and blue colors of the flag of Bavaria, reversed to produce the BMW roundel.
